Babies & toddlers

Why baby classes?

We have a number of different baby classes determined by age, experience and capability.

Baby classes are aimed at developing confident safer swimmers while stimulating your baby's physical and psychological development.

At what age can I start my baby?

Although we are never too old to learn, beginning learn to swim classes earlier rather than later will ensure a better learning outcome. Healthy babies, once immunised, can begin swimming lessons at 3 months of age.

Very young babies have a natural affinity with water. They have spent their first nine  months of life immersed in liquid.

Why start so young

Introducing babies to water awareness classes at a young age prevents them from developing a fear of water.

We are not born with fear. Fear is a learned response. It is an emotion developed through unpleasant experience, the threat of danger, pain or harm or transferred from others.

Introducing babies to water in a confident, loving and caring manner on a regular basis lowers the chance  of a fear of water developing.

We believe the first swimming lesson should start with a baby’s first immersion in water: their first bath.

What can babies learn?

Swimming facilitates development of:

  1. Balance and coordination

  2. Strength and endurance

  3. Independence

  4. An acceptance of challenges and learning as fun and exciting

  5. Socialising skills through group lessons and much more.

Babies and children learn best through playing, doing, imitating, communicating, repeating and interacting.

Our activity based games allow babies and young children to learn important water safety and swimming skills: floating, submerging and understanding depth and most importantly a “feel” for the water. These skills form the basis of swimming.

University research shows that babies who swim regularly from a very young age are more school ready when beginning school than the normal population. In many skills up to 18 months more advanced than the general population (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Pu_ZPQFwP0)

Do I need to be in the water with my Baby?

Yes a care giver must be in the water with their child for baby classes.

At around three years old, depending on your child’s abilities, it may no longer be necessary to accompany your child into the water.
